Michael Smith Ph.D., LMHC

Licensed Mental Health Counselor, President of IBIS Counseling and Consulting PC

Dr. Smith specializes in hospice care, bereavement, and the transformative use of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to heal trauma. Dr. Smith finds profound meaning supporting those facing the challenges of end-of-life transitions and the aftermath of loss. He has earned his PhD and MA in Clinical Psychology from Saybrook University, where he delved deeply into the complexities of end-of-life care. His expertise in hospice care allows him to support individuals and families through the emotional landscapes of terminal illness, providing comfort and clarity during life’s most challenging moments. In his bereavement work, he offers support for those grappling with loss, helping them navigate their grief with empathy and understanding.

Regarding trauma, Dr. Smith's extensive experience and training in EMDR has equipped him with the tools to help clients reprocess traumatic experiences while also fostering healing and resilience. Dr. Smith's use of EMDR is a cornerstone of his practice, enabling his clients to break free from the debilitating effects of trauma. This innovative therapy helps individuals reprocess painful memories, transforming them from sources of distress into narratives of strength and survival. By integrating EMDR with traditional grief counseling, Dr. Smith provides a holistic approach to healing that addresses both the mind and the heart.

Dr. Smith's strives to provide a place of solace, where clients are encouraged to explore their emotions without fear or judgment. When appropraite, Dr. Smith also employs a variety of techniques, including mindfulness, motivational interviewing, narrative therapy, acceptance and comittment therapy, and client-centered therapy, ensuring that each session is uniquely tailored to meet the needs of his clients.

Beyond private practice, Dr. Smith is also available as a public speaker. He is currently engaged in writing on topics related to grief, trauma, and end-of-life care, contributing insights to both professional and public audiences. In his personal time, Dr. Smith finds peace in nature with his therapy dog and companion Mila, kayaking, surfing, tending to bonsai trees, or tending to his garden. These activities, along with his yoga practice, keep him grounded and renewed, allowing him to give his best to his clients. Dr. Smith’s mission is to illuminate the path through grief and trauma, helping clients find their way back to wholeness. He views his work as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, showing that even in the face of profound loss, healing and hope are possible.

Mila Smith

Psychiatric Service Dog (In Training)

Meet Mila, an extraordinary Bernedoodle with a heart as big as her fluffy, black coat. Mila is more than just a service dog; she is a beacon of comfort and hope for those navigating the stormy seas of grief and trauma. Her gentle eyes and wagging tail have a magical way of breaking through the walls of sorrow and pain, creating a safe space for healing and growth.

With a natural intuition for human emotions, Mila has become an indispensable companion for Dr. Smith in psychotherapy sessions. Her presence brings an immediate sense of calm, allowing clients to open up and explore their feelings in ways they never thought possible. Whether it's resting her head on a trembling hand or simply sitting quietly beside someone, Mila knows just how to provide the perfect support.

Trained with the highest standards of care and compassion, Mila has mastered the art of being there when words fall short. She listens with her whole being, offering a kind of understanding that only a dog can. Her playful spirit can coax a smile from even the most heavy-hearted, and her unwavering loyalty reminds clients that they are never alone on their journey to healing.

Mila's role in the therapy room goes beyond her physical presence. She embodies resilience, love, and the promise of better days ahead. Each wag of her tail is a reminder that joy can be found even in the darkest moments, and every cuddle is a testament to the power of unconditional love. In a world where emotions can be overwhelming, Mila stands as a steadfast guide, helping clients find their way back to peace and wholeness.
